Exercise and the Elderly

Always consult a doctor before starting any exercise program. Did you know that one of the best ways to slow down the aging process is through exercise? Exercise can be very enjoyable for seniors if done at a pace they can enjoy. First and foremost you should get an okay from their physician and obtain some form of life-alarm services before beginning an exercise program.

There are lots of exercise programs available for seniors. Some are very inexpensive or even free at local YMCA and Senior centers. These centers are also a great way for seniors to socialize. Having an outing a few times a week can be very beneficial for seniors.

Low impact

Exercises for seniors should start out very low impact. For instance, swimming or water aerobics would be an excellent choice. Walking or bicycling are also a great ways to start. If there is a balance problem with bicycling, there are adult trikes or three wheeled bicycles available at local department stores.

If you have a senior who does not particularly like going out, try and create an enjoyable atmosphere at home. Find relaxing music or music from a time period that holds fond memories and let your loved one exercise while listening to it. There are several chair or floor exercises that can be done at home. For more information or ideas on these exercises, nihseniorhealth.gov is a great website to visit.

Great piece or equipment:

A recumbent bike is also a great piece or equipment. If you have more than one elderly person in the family or neighborhood, maybe you could hold a group exercise session at home.

Prepared for exercising

Make sure your senior is prepared for exercising. Get loose comfortable clothes. Get shoes with a good arch support. Make sure they are well fitted and have good cushioning to absorb shock. If your loved one goes out walking or bicycling alone, make sure that they have a good way of communicating in case of emergency.

Make sure any exercise done starts out slowly and is not overdone. When first staring out, make sure your loved one is properly monitored for any type of discomfort of pain.

Exercise body and mind

Seniors should not only exercise their body but their mind as well. Many times this fact is over looked. Games are a great ways to exercise mentally. Board games, crossword puzzles and bingo are great games for seniors. Perhaps you can find a bridge or social club for seniors. This would give a great opportunity to socialize also.

It is well documented that exercise in elderly can slow the aging process, but only if done properly. Stretch before and after exercising and do each motion slowly and carefully. Injury or illness will only detract from the benefit of exercise in elderly people. It can’t be stressed enough that exercise in elderly people be approached with caution, and that life alarm services be maintained and kept within reach.
