Massachusetts New Pension Reform
The State of Massachusetts recently unveiled a new pension reform plan that tackles many of the issues that have angered taxpayers for years. All three branches of the state government came together to approve this pension reform. The bill brings sweeping changes that seek to eliminate abuses to the system that have been going on for years. One of the hot points in the pension reform plan is the elimination of “termination allowances.” These provisions use to let officials who resigned in disgrace still collect a pension from the state. In addition the new law seeks to limit pension allowance to only wages and salary. This means that excessive bonuses that certain lawmakers gifted themselves would not count towards their pensions.
Keeping Pensions Viable
Massachusetts is just one example of what states and companies are going to need to do to keep pensions viable in the future. Many other states, as well as other countries, have initiated pension reform to cope with aging populations. Most of these reforms are set out to minimize incentive distortions. In order for them to be successful they need to be limited to the people that deserve them and awarded in a fair manner. A couple new and important sections have been added to pension reform.
